Artist Statement

Art is important to culture because it is a way of illustrating traditions and moments in time. Paintings and sculptures have ways of freezing moments and giving the viewer a glimpse into that period of time. Artist can use their works to express not only their individuality, but the integrity and flaws within a society. Art can be found in any different form with any different material and it is up to the artist to choose how to express it. Depending on the artist's surroundings they can take from the environment and the experiences around them.

When I first began learning about other artist I always leaned towards Renaissance artists. I have always liked the way they could be soft with some features and then harsh with others. Leonardo da Vinci in particular is one of my favorites because not only was he an artist, but he was an inventor as well. I have always been more interested in art that came before the modern art era, but lately I have been expanding my artistic horizon. After doing a presentation on the artist Eva Hesse I have become very interested in her work. The materials that she used were very uncommon for her time and I like when unusual materials are found in art pieces. I like the way she uses a curve in most of her work and the way her pieces have a lightness to them. Her use of textures made her pieces have more depth than they appeared to have.

I have personally always been interested in things that have effects on our brains. I like to read articles and books about disorders of the brain because they can show you another view of the world through someone else's eyes. History, religion, and culture are other things I like to read about. All three of these categories have shaped our world into where we are living today and how we got to this point in our lives.

In the future I want to expand from my comfort zone with art. I want to explore different materials that I would normally not even think to use. I would like to create sculptures using materials like wood or natural materials from outside. I would be interested in doing something with clothing. Until this semester I was never really into computer art and now that I have experienced it I want to continue with it.
